So you’ve decided to visit Quebec City! YAY! You are going to absolutely love it there! Quebec City reminds me of a Canadian version of Europe. Cute cobblestone streets lined with boutique shops and fun bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect getaway with so much to do!
But where in the city should you stay?
It can be confusing trying to find accommodation in a city that you have never visited before. When Dave and I visited Quebec City, we loved our hotel, but now that I know what I know, I would book somewhere closer to Old Quebec.
This guide has everything you need to help you decide exactly where to stay in Quebec City, along with recommendations on areas to stay in and my dream hotel picks.

Tips for Choosing Where to Stay
- Proximity to attractions – Do you want to be within walking distance to Old Quebec’s historic sites or do you prefer somewhere a but quieter.
- Vibe of the area – Would you prefer charming cobblestone streets and history at your doorstep or a more modern city neighbourhood with coffee shops and retail therapy.
- Budget and hotel style – Quebec City has lots of different styles of hotels to choose from, from boutique inns to luxury hotels inside the Old City walls. What is most important to you?
- Transport and parking – If you are road tripping like we did, parking is difficult inside Old Quebec. We stayed outside the walls and were able to find a hotel with parking but we did not use our car while we were there.
- Seasonal considerations – If you are visiting in Winter, staying near Old Quebec will mean that you are closer to Christmas Markets and Winter festivities. Whereas, in Summer, staying near the waterfront will mean you are closer to concerts and events.

There are loads of great accommodation options in Quebec City! We stayed at Hotel Quebec Best Western PLUS Centre-Ville which was a really lovely hotel with a great pool! I’ll never forget the epic black out curtains! However, next time I would opt to stay here in Old Quebec.

Below you will find a list of accommodation options by location through Quebec City.
Old Quebec
Why I would stay here
- Walkability: Within walking distance to lots of things to see and do, including cafes, restaurants, Christmas markets.
- The history: You are surrounded by history in Old Quebec because it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Imagine cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture, and historic landmarks right outside your door.
- Romantic vibe: I would describe the streets as just that – romantic, especially when they are lit up at night or have a dusting of snow in the Winter. It is the perfect place to stay for couples.
- Scenic views: Depending on where you stay, you might get a hotel with a view of St. Lawrence River or one that has a rooftop terrace with amazing city views.
- Atmosphere: Think street performers, horse drawn carriages and cozy restaurants. If you are looking for atmosphere in Quebec City, you will find it in Old Quebec.

Budget option: The Hotel du Vieux Quebec is a great option if you are looking not to spend too much money but still want to stay somewhere nice. This hotel has a modern, but cozy feel, especially at Christmas when the hotel is decorated with Christmas reeves and lights. If I were to go back to Quebec City, at Christmas, this is where I would stay.
Luxury option: If you are looking for luxury, you can’t go wrong with the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. It’s literally a castle overlooking St. Lawrence River. This is my dream stay in Quebec City.
Saint-Roche
This is where we stayed on our last trip to Quebec City. It was a little further away from the action of the Old City and the restaurants but a really nice hotel and didn’t break the bank. We were also able to park our car there after our Fall colours road trip.
Why I would stay here
- Quiet surroundings: When compared with Old Quebec, Saint-Roche has a more quiet feel to it.
- Cheaper accommodation: Because you are not in the tourist centre of Quebec City, the hotels tend to be a bit cheaper which is one of the reasons we were drawn to this area.
- Close but not crowded: It’s about a 15-30 minute walk or quick bus/Uber to Old Québec, so you get easy access to the main attractions without staying in the busiest, most touristy area.
- Local feel: Saint-Roche has more of a “local” vibe to it when compared with Old Quebec. There are fewer tour groups and more residents in the area.

Budget option: If you are looking to save money, definitely go with the Rose Hôtel Invisible. This hotel is beautiful and actually cheap! Which is something I feel like you can’t say about many hotels in Canada these days. The owners have really put a lot of effort into the hotel design.
Luxury option: Best Western Plus City Centre Centre-Ville is where we stayed and although it was a little further away than I would have liked, it was still only a 15-30 minute walk to Old Quebec and we got to experience the city along the way which we would have missed out on otherwise. The hotel itself is lovely, with a swimming pool and the COMFIEST beds and for a nice hotel, isn’t actually that expensive!
The Best Western also has parking but you need to pay extra to use it so you will need to calculate this into your total hotel cost.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste
Why I would stay here
- Quirky neighbourhood: Saint-Jean-Baptiste is known for its indie shops, cozy cafes and artistic vibe.
- Close to Old Quebec: Even though you are right in the centre, you are only a 10 minute walk to Old Quebec.
- Local feel: If you prefer to stay away from the tourist scene, Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a great area to stay in.

Budget option: The Auberge J.A Moisan will make you feel like you have stepped back in time and the prices are really affordable!
Luxury option: Depending on the date, the Hilton Quebec might actually end up being cheaper than Delta Hotels but you’ll need to double check. If it is similar in price, I would go for the Hilton. It’s located literally right outside the gates to Old Quebec and has lovely rooms and facilities, including an outdoor heated pool.
Grande Allée
Why I would stay here
- Nightlife central: Grand Allée is packed with bars and pubs so it’s perfect if you like to go out.
- Lots of dining options: From patios in summer to cozy restaurants in winter, this is where lots of locals and visitors gather.
- Close to Old Quebec: It’s a little further away at around 30 minutes walking time to Old Quebec, but there is also a bus option which can get you there in just 13 minutes.
Where I would stay in Grande Allée
Budget option: Hôtel Le Concorde Québec is a really great option if you want to be within walking distance to restaurants, bars and Old Quebec but also want to save money on accommodation. It also has a revolving restaurant with insane views!
Luxury option: The Hotel Maurice is a boutique style hotel with beautiful décor and within walking distance to absolutely everything!
