Is October a good time to visit Banff?
In my opinion, October/Fall is one of the best shoulder seasons to visit Banff and Lake Louise. You get golden larches, fall colours, fewer crowds than summer, and the first magical dustings of snow on the peaks. It feels like two seasons colliding and it’s breathtaking.
Best time to go: late September to early October (this is when larches are usually at their peak).
After October 15th, many major attractions begin to close, including:
- Moraine Lake – Closed 15th October
- The shuttles to Lake Louise – Closed 15th October
- Canoe Rentals at Lake Louise – Closed 14th October
- Summer Gondolas and chairlifts – Closed 14th October with the Sunshine Gondola closing on September 22nd
Summer is busiest time to visit Banff and of course with that you usually get beautiful sunny weather every single day. However, in the Summer, wildfires are also really frequent so you might have to put up with smoky air.
In October, you might still get wildfire risk, but the reward is golden larches, cozy sweater weather, and dreamy fall scenery.
October in Banff is usually less busy than Summer but still decently busy due to all of the photographers who are there to capture the beautiful Fall colours.
If you want fewer crowds, magical fall colours, and crisp fresh air, October in Banff is 100% worth it. Just make sure to book your accommodation and shuttles early. Even in October, Banff hotels and tours can fill up quickly.
When is the best time in October to see the Fall colours in Banff?
The best time to see the golden larches in Banff is at the end of September to early October. This can vary from year to year but last year (2023), when we visited Banff at the end of September – beginning of October, the larches were at their peak right at the very end of September.
Other than the larches, there are also Aspen trees which turn yellow during the Fall in Banff and these tend to stick around for longer.

What is the weather like in Banff in October?
Banff’s weather in October can be unpredictable. If you want to see the golden larches and Fall colours in Banff National Park, the weather is something that you are going to have to just be flexible with. Some years it can be super hot and Summery in Banff in October and others (like what we experience last year), can get early snow, rain and cool to freezing temperatures. Other years, you can get a complete mixture of both!
Quite often the temperatures in Banff in October hover around the 10-15 degrees Celsius.
Early snow is not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to photographing the Fall colours in Banff. A sprinkling of snow mixed in with the Autumn colours can make for an absolutely magical scene like something out of a fairy-tale.
I recommend packing for all weather conditions. This may make your suitcase heavier but it will be so worth it if you get caught out in a freak snow storm or if the weather turns out to be hot enough to swim in the beautiful Banff lakes.
Read the below 2 questions for a more in detail answer about snow and rain in Banff National Park in October. ⬇
Does Banff get snow in October?
Banff can get snow in October yes. We were in Banff National Park in the first week of October and it snowed a once. At the time we were hiking at higher elevations at the Little Beehive viewpoint above Lake Louise. Mainly, October brings a dusting of snow to the mountain tops, making them look absolutely magical. This however, means that it is most likely raining down in the valley and in the towns which bring me to my next point of whether Banff is rainy in October.
Is Banff rainy in October?
October is a transitional month for Banff when it comes to weather which means, it can be rainy at times, but most of all it tends to be cloudier on average than the Summer months. When we were visiting Banff during late September / early October, we had half a day of really heavy rain. The rest of the time was sunny/cloudy with a little bit of snowy rain when we were up higher in the mountains doing the Healy Pass hike.
Sunrise and Sunset times in Banff in October
One thing to note about Banff in October, is that the days start to get shorter, with sunrise at around 7:45am and sunset at around 7pm at the beginning of October.
Towards the end of October, the sunrise in Banff is at 8:30am and the sunset is at 6:20pm.
Note: We found it harder to get a good sunset due to the clouds at the end of September / beginning of October in Banff.

Is Lake Louise Frozen in October
I’m sure we have asked this question at some point because we are always either looking for Lake Louise to be in a perfectly frozen state for ice skating, or completely thawed so that it is that beautiful turquoise blue. If you want to see Lake Louise frozen, you will need to visit Banff in Winter. Lake Louise doesn’t usually freeze until late November or early December.
When we were at Lake Louise in October, the lake was still a bright turquoise blue, however this was at the beginning of the month.

Can You Visit Moraine Lake in October
Moraine Lake is only open until October 15th when the road leading up to the lake closes. This is because the road goes past large avalanche paths. You are technically still allowed to walk or bike to Moraine Lake after this closure if the weather is good, but you should be properly trained in Avalanche safety and have all of the right gear with you.
👉 Reminder: Moraine Lake (when open from mid June to Mid October) is always closed to personal vehicles and so you need to book a Parks Canada shuttle, Roam Public Transit, or a tour to get there.
Visiting Banff in Fall vs Summer
We have been to Banff in both the Fall and the Summer. We loved the Summertime for swimming in the lakes but for photography and hiking we preferred the Fall.
Visiting Banff in the Fall meant cooler temperatures for hiking and the golden larches and Fall colours made getting a good photo so much easier!
You can’t go wrong with visiting Banff during either of these seasons because both are equally as beautiful in their own ways.
Can you Ski or Snowboard in Banff or Lake Louise in October
You cannot usually ski or snowboard in Banff or Lake Louise in October. Unless there is a freak snow dump in October, the ski resorts in Banff usually open in mid-November.
Are There Bears in Banff in October
The Banff National Park bears are usually still out and about in October. They tend to hibernate from November until April.
National Parks Pass
You will need a national parks pass to visit places in Banff National Park. You can purchase these online on the Parks Canada website or at any MEC Store or on entry to Banff National Park.
What to Pack for a Trip to Banff in October
Like I said before, if you are visiting Banff in October then you need to be prepared for all kinds of weather. Here is a list of the basics that I recommend packing:
- Fleece
- Puffer Jacket
- Gloves
- Raincoat
- Backpack Raincover
- Banff National Park Pass
- Bear Spray
- Beanie
- Hand warmers
- Leggings
- Thermals
- Sweater
- An umbrella
- Micro spikes
- Headlamp – in case you want to hike early to beat the crowds.
- Swim Suit – you never know what the weather might be like
- Trekking Poles
- Hiking Boots
- Hiking Socks
- Your Camera!
Where to Stay in Banff in October
When we visited Banff and Lake Louise in October, we stayed at the Deer Lodge which was awesome because it was within walking distance to Lake Louise and we didn’t need to worry about parking or catching a shuttle.
Something to note is that Banff town is about a 40 minute drive from Lake Louise, so I recommend splitting your time between the 2 areas to cut down on driving back and forth.
I don’t remember camping in Banff in October unless you have some good warm gear because it will most likely be quite cold.
Great hotels in Banff Town
- Moose Hotel and Suites – This hotel is so lovely! It is located right in the centre of Banff town so you can walk to all of the shops and restaurants really easily.
- Fairmont Banff Springs – To stay in a Fairmont Hotel will always be a bucket list experience for me.
- HI Banff Alpine Centre – Hostel – We have stayed here a couple of times and also at the one in Lake Louise. If you are looking for cheaper accommodation the HI Hostels are the way to go! You can get a private room or stay in a dorm.
Amazing hotels that I recommend in Lake Louise
We really enjoyed staying in Lake Louise in Fall but if the Deer Lodge is not available, here are a couple of alternative options.
- Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise – The Fairmont Chateau is a HUGE castle hotel right on the shoreline of Lake Louise so it’s the perfect place to stay if you want to hike around Lake Louise.
- Baker Creek By Basecamp – These cute cabins are a little away (13 minute drive) from Lake Louise, but if you are looking for the full accommodation “experience,” then this is the place for you!
Things to do in Banff in October
There are loads of fun things to do in Banff in October! My favourite things involve golden larch hikes like the Larch Valley Trail and Healy Pass, having a cute Fall picnic, going up the Banff Gondola to see the best views of Banff without needing to hike and road tripping the Icefields Parkway.
There are also events on in Banff in October like Banff Pride month so there are countless ways to celebrate in town!
Our Thoughts
Personally, even though it rained a bit while we were in Banff during Fall, I actually preferred this time to Summer. I don’t know if it’s because of my photographer instincts but I just found the Fall colours and fact that it snow at any moment so so exciting!
Banff is beautiful in any season but during Fall, Banff’s beauty was on a whole new level!
